Human rights struggle in Honduras

The state of affairs after hostile removal of President Manuel Zelaya

On June 28th, 2009 just six months after being democratically elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya was dragged out of bed at gun point and forced to leave his country.

In his place, a military regime has taken control and trampled on the rights of the citizens of Honduras.

This action has been condemned by the United States, European Union , United Nations and the O.A.S., however the American government has thus refused to recognize this action as a coup d’état legally which limits our ability to enforce further actions.

Although we have stopped supplying military aid to the country it’s not enough. More measures need to be taken to protect the citizens now being victimized by the new government.

People continue to pour into the streets of Honduras in protest, fighting for their right to democracy and free elections. Sadly this has only been met with violence and gross violations of human rights. Allegedly the new regime has been implementing mass arrests and beatings to anyone who speaks against them.

This is a huge slap in the face of the free world. Those of us with a voice should let our political leaders know that we want the thugs who are committing these crimes to be held accountable, and that we want the rights of our Honduran brothers and sisters to be upheld.

Carl Schurz:
If you want to be free, there is but one way; it is to guarantee an equally full measure of liberty to all your neighbors. There is no other.
